Raito Low (劉靜怡) is an experimental animation artist specializing in stop-motion techniques. Her work explores the intersections of nature, the female body, and environmental themes, often incorporating organic materials such as plants, stones, and other natural elements. Through poetic visual narratives, she reflects on the fragility of life and the eternal cycles of nature, blending animation, video art, and multimedia installations to evoke a profound sensory connection to the environment.
Raito’s work has been shown at the Matsu Biennial, Hualien Palafang Art Festival, and screened at over 100 film festivals worldwide. Her recent honors include the 2025 Kaohsiung Award and the Taiwan Special Award at the Guandu International Animation Festival. Through her practice, she aims to provoke contemplation on the delicate balance between time, existence, and nature, inviting audiences into a quiet, meditative journey of reflection.
Raito at prehistoricsoul LAB
During her residency at Prehistoric LAB, Raito continues her project Plant Body / Island Memory, focusing on plant-based materials and ritual objects used in Balinese ceremonies and domestic spaces. Through small-scale field observations around Denpasar, she documents leaves, flowers, and woven offerings, studying their textures, forms, and material transformations. These observations inform a series of experimental stop-motion works animating processes of decay and regeneration. Her practice combines photography, drawing, and sound recording. Animation functions as a slow, research-driven process rather than a purely technical tool, resulting in a short video reflection and artist text for the LAB archive.
